¿Intimate surgeries? It’s time to talk about the procedures that have, steadily and surely, positioned themselves as a female favorite with millions of patients around the world: vaginal surgeries.

With age, after giving birth, going through hormonal changes, menopause or after certain medical treatments, millions of women can suffer from painful and uncomfortable ailments that can impact their self-esteem, intimacy and overall quality of life. Just as there are women who wish for larger breasts or a flat stomach, there are women who want to improve the appearance and function of their vagina.

The good news is that vaginal surgeries can help you recover your confidence, improve your quality of life and treat conditions such as:

  • Vaginal Laxity (also called vaginal looseness)
  • Bladder prolapse
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Painful intercourse
  • Low or loss of sensation during intercourse (lack of satisfaction)
  • Improve vaginal appearance
  • Chronic vaginal dryness

Vaginal surgeries, sometimes grouped under “Vaginal Rejuvenation” surgeries, are different procedures that are designed to improve your intimate problems, enhance the function of your genitals along with improving the appearance of your vagina.

If you are interested in learning more about these procedures, we think you’ll probably want to know more about some of the most popular vaginal surgeries that are both safe and extremely efficient.

  • Vaginal Tightening
  • Vaginal Rejuvenation
  • Pelvic Floor surgical Reconstruction

These 3 surgeries are not the same, they have different objectives and the way they can help a patient are unique. On the other hand, they are commonly referred to as vaginal rejuvenation surgery, interchangeably, because they do share one common goal: improve your quality of life while solving an intimate problem.

Vaginal Tightening Surgery

Vaginal tightening is a surgery whose main goal is to narrow or tighten the vaginal canal. As a patient, the main way you can benefit from vaginal tightening surgery is to decrease or eliminate altogether that feeling of having a ‘loose’ vaginal, without tone, which can improve your self-esteem, as well as the sensation and dynamics of intercourse.

This is an outpatient surgery, meaning you can recover at home, where you can be comfortable. (No place like home, right?) Your plastic surgeon, who in addition is an expert in gynecology and obstetrics (OBGYN), will tighten the muscles and soft tissues of your vagina. By doing this, once you’ve recovered, your vaginal will feel tight, just like it felt before you had children.

Pelvic Floor Reconstruction Surgery

Pelvic floor reconstruction surgery has as a main goal fix different conditions on your pelvic floor and vaginal canal, some of which could have been caused after giving birth or after reaching a certain age, like bladder or rectum prolapse. These conditions are not only painful but also take an immense toll on your overall quality of life, making you vulnerable to experience extremely embarrassing situations like fecal and urinary incontinence.

Many patients, after having pelvic floor surgical reconstruction have also reported an improvement during intercourse, even though this is not the main objective of the surgery.

During pelvic floor reconstruction surgery, the plastic surgeon will re-secure internal organs: your uterus, bladder and rectum. Sometimes, the surgery can be combined with a hysterectomy, to remove your womb. This is a minimally invasive surgery, since it can be laparoscopic and performed via the vaginal opening.

Vaginal Rejuvenation Surgery

Vaginal rejuvenation ‘plastic surgery’ is a procedure that combines vaginal tightening with reconstructive/cosmetic surgery on the outside of the vagina. In addition to removing excess skin and tightening the vaginal canal, the plastic surgeon can also narrow the size of the vaginal opening and improve the appearance of the external organs: the vulva, labia minora, labia majora,

With this surgery, not only will you bid farewell to that ‘loose’ vagina feeling, but will also improve urinary incontinence and improve sexual function, the appearance and sensation of the area.

For example, the surgeon can reduce the size and length of the labia. At the end of this surgery, patients report an overall improvement in their self-esteem, overall quality of life, and sexual satisfaction. This surgery takes 1 to 2 hours and can be performed as an outpatient procedure, so you can recover in the comfort and privacy of your own home.

Vaginal Surgeries and the Recovery Process

Just as the majority of our patients, recovering from vaginal surgery is a common worry. This is completely normal, as visualizing how you’ll recover from an intimate surgery is quite different to any other procedure you’ve probably had in the past.

On average, returning to light activities and a job that is not too physically demanding will take 10 to 15 days, depending on the surgery you had.

The first 3 to 5 days are usually the most uncomfortable, but if you follow the doctor’s instructions in regards to your aftercare, hygiene and pain medication, they are tolerable.

Your surgeon will also explain what precautions you need to take for some of the most obvious and delicate activities, such as how to take care of your stitches and how to shower.

As far as intercourse, your surgeon will tell you when can you resume intimacy. For most patients, it will be between 6 to 8 weeks.

Here at CosMed we want you to remember that above all things, these surgeries have this goal: helping you. Whether it is you need to improve your self esteem, your confidence when sharing an intimate moment with your partner, feeling better about your body or improving your quality of life, each and every one of these surgeries will be planned according to you and your needs.
