Important
information about Sutures, Incision Lines, Skin
Damage and Revisions:
SUTURES:
The type of sutures is determined by your surgeon's
preference. Most surgeons use a combination of
Permanent, Absorbable and Non-absorbable sutures.
Closing incisions in layers provides additional
support to healing tissues. To provide more long-term
support permanent sutures are placed in the deepest
layers of tissue and are not visible. Absorbable
sutures are often placed closer to the surface
of the skin and dissolve on their own over a period
of time during the healing process. Non-absorbable
sutures may be used on the skins surface and do
require removal.
INCISION LINES: Very careful planning of
the incision in after weight loss patients is
critical so the incision is as symmetrical as
possible. It is understandable that results vary
depending on the degree of skin damage in the
overstretched tissues and the degree of elasticity
and asymmetry that can differ in the same person
from one side of the body to the other. It is
the surgeons desire to obtain the maximum degree
of support to the tissues in the execution of
the surgery and this can cause a slight difference
in the position of the incision. We need to remember
that after the healing process has subsided (normally
8 to 12 months) the incision lines fade and normally
will become less visible than stretch marks.
SKIN
DAMAGE: Always your particular type and degree
of skin damage must be discussed with your surgeon
before surgery. We need to remember that not only
the skin but also the subcutaneous tissues are
affected by obesity and on some occasions this
condition is represented as irregular surface
in the skin. This may result in scar migration
and further surgery may be required to correct
the condition.
REVISIONS:
Revisions of surgeries in after weight loss
patients should always be considered, especially
in those patients with a more dramatic loss of
weight. Another important factor to consider is
the patient with skin damage with the tendency
to produce scar tissue. At CosMed we do not charge
for revision surgery to correct, modify or refine
results from a previous surgery within a reasonable
time after the original surgical procedure.
With
any plastic surgery procedure results don't last
forever, ageing, weight fluctuations, sun exposure,
stress and other factors in time can lead to some
sagging of the skin.
Maintaining good eating habits, regular exercise,
weight stability and a good skin care program
will help you retain the wonderful benefits of
your surgical procedures.
