after surgery.
3.

No foods or any liquid (including water) after 12:00
midnight.
THE
DAY OF YOUR SURGERY:
1. The surgical facility is not responsible for any
valuables therefore, we suggest that you remove all
types of jewelry and leave them at home. This includes
eyeglasses and purses.
2.
Dress in loose and comfortable cloths that buttons or

and home after the surgery. When you arrive at our office,
let the receptionist know who will be taking you home
and they will be given a time to pick you up. We need
to have the telephone number of were you will be when
you leave the office.
AFTER
YOUR NASAL SURGERY:
1.
YOUR FIRST NIGHT. It is important for you to elevate
your head on at least 2 pillows to help keep swelling
to a minimum. Elevating the head of your mattress by
placing phone books between it and the box springs is
advised. Applying ice bags (crushed ice is best) to
the eyes during the day for the first 48 hours will
decrease the amount of swelling you will have postoperatively.
Do not put pressure on the nasal cast.
2.
MEDICATIONS / PAIN: You will experience minimal post-operative
discomfort. Tylenol, either plain or extra-strength
is usually sufficient. You have to fill a prescription
after your surgery. Take the medications as directed
(no alcohol is permitted while taking medication). It
is best to take pain medication with crackers, jello,
etc.
3.
WOUND CARE: Your nose will be dressed with a cast over
your nose. This cast will be removed, seven to ten days
after your surgery. Keep crushed ice in plastic bags,
covered with a towel over your eyes and cheeks for at
least 24 hours continuously. Slight signs of blood may
show on the drip pad under your nose. The incisions
will be checked at your first postoperative visit. Keep
inside edges of your nose nostril any stitches clean
by using a Q-tip saturated with hydrogen peroxide followed
by a thin coating of Polysporin ointment. You may advance
the Q-tip into the nose as far as the cotton on the
Q-tip, but no further. There is nothing you can do to
hurt anything inside your nose as long as you are gentle
in your actions.
4.
ACTIVITY: After your surgery go directly home and remain
in bed until the following morning. You are allowed
up to the bathroom with help. You will be on restricted
activities the days after surgery, please discuss with
your doctor. You will be able to resume strenuous exercise
3-4 weeks following your surgery. Be careful to avoid
hitting your nose for 8 weeks after surgery.
5.
DIET: You may have liquids as tolerated then to soft
foods, to regular diet. If you become sick go back to
liquids. For two weeks avoid foods that require excess
lip movement, i.e., apples, corn on the cob, etc.
6.
NASAL DISCHARGE. You will probably have a bloody nasal
discharge for 2-4 days so change the drip pad under
your nose as often as needed. To prevent postoperative
bleeding, do not sniff or blow your nose for the first
two weeks after surgery. Try not to sneeze, but if you
do, sneeze through your mouth.
7.
GLASSES. You can wear glasses over the cast. After the
cast is removed, do not allow glasses or anything else
to rest on your nose for 8 weeks. Glasses should be
taped to the forehead (we will show you how). Contacts
can be worn as soon as the swelling has decreased enough
for them to be inserted.
8. SWELLING. Swelling and discoloration (under your
eyes) is expected, as is uneven swelling (more on one
side than on the other). Do not be alarmed if you continue
to swell after the first 24 hours, because swelling
reaches its peak at 48-72 hours. The inside of the nose
will also be swollen; this will result in difficulty
breathing, which will progressively improve with time.
About 80% of the swelling is gone 21 days after surgery.
9.
OTHER EXPECTATIONS. It is good idea to avoid looking
in mirrors immediately after surgery. No matter how
thoroughly we discussed the operation beforehand you
will see something you did not expect, i.e., more swelling
or discoloration. This will only tend to worry you.
We will see you frequently in the office after surgery
and will inform you about your progress. It will usually
be better than you imagine.
11.
MAKE UP: After the cast is removed, the nose can be
washed gently with a bland soap and make up can be applied.
Moisturizing creams can be used if the nose is dry.
Over other areas of your face, you may start applying
make-up three days after your surgery.
12.
SMOKING: Avoid smoking for a minimum of 2 weeks following
the operation to help minimize ischemia (lack of oxygen)
affecting the tissues.
13.
DRIVING: Do not drive until instructed to do so; usually
up to seven days after surgery.
14.
SLEEPING: It is preferable that you sleep on your back.
Remember to elevate your head the first 2 nights.
15.
BATHING: While the cast is on, you may have your hair
washed beauty salon fashion. Take care to prevent the
cast from getting wet. You may stand in the shower the
third post-operative day.
16.
ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES. Alcoholic beverages are discouraged
during the first 3 weeks after surgery. A social drink
would-be acceptable, but enough alcohol to make you
feel "relaxed" also lowers your sense of awareness
which is needed to avoid disturbing the area after surgery.
17.
SPORTS: Strenuous sports may be resumed after four weeks.
Refrains from any activity which significantly raises
your body temperature, blood pressure or pulse, for
three weeks after your surgery.
18.
SUN EXPOSURE: Do not sunbathe for 8 weeks after the
surgery. Avoid all sun exposure to unprotected incisions
for a minimum of 6 months following surgery. Be sure
to wear a protective head covering or sunscreen to protect
your scars, you must use always a sunscreen (UVA Guard
Shade) with a minimum of SPF 15.
19.
POST-OPERATIVE VISITS: Subsequent office visits will
be determined according to your progress.
